Layla Sleep^® offers five kinds of bed bases and mattress frames, described below.

The Layla^® Foundation is built with solid wood slat construction for strong center support and adequate airflow to your mattress. It's easy to assemble with a friend (but actually). Once you're done, you can place your mattress directly on top of it without a box spring or foundation.

The Layla^® Platform Bed features solid wood slats to provide a structurally-sound base for your bed. Complete with integrated legs and custom-wrapped fabric, this bed complements an array of existing decor. You can place your mattress directly on top of the slats and you're ready to go.

The Layla^® Bed Frame, modern and discreet, easily complements any bedroom decor. With solid steel rails and composite legs, it delivers ideal support and airflow for your mattress. You'll need to pair it with a box spring or foam mattress foundation.

The Layla^® Adjustable Bed Base delivers full-body adjustability so you can enjoy the perfect angle for sleeping, binging-watching TV, and anything else. An intuitive wireless remote allows you to raise your head or feet independently. Simply place your mattress directly on top and ride the wave of comfort.

Unless you want to sleep with your mattress directly on the floor, you'll typically need a box spring to support your mattress. If you choose the Layla^® Platform Bed, Layla^® Foundation, or Layla^® Adjustable Bed Base, you won't need a foundation, but the Layla^® Bed Frame requires a box spring.

If your bed already has built-in slats, like those in the platform bed, you don't need a box spring. So, yes, you can put a mattress directly on the slats.

The short answer is that there is no difference. They're usually interchangeable. A mattress foundation used to be a wooden box with springs or a metal grid to support an innerspring mattress. But most modern mattress foundations are still referred to box springs for the sake of convenience.
